The Livestock Ranch (Cattle)

Raising cattle is a capital-heavy, land-based commodity business run against a multi-year price cycle. You do not control the cattle price or the cost of feed, so feed cost and grazing capacity decide the year, and timing the herd against the cycle decides the decade. You are not buying a steady paycheck; you are buying a herd, the right to graze good grass, and a seat in a market that swings.

Cited sources Typical bands for this kind of business, compiled from the public sources listed under Sources and method; they are a synthesis, not figures copied from any one source. A fit if you…

  • Can carry capital and patience through a multi-year cattle cycle
  • Understand grazing capacity and feed-cost management
  • Want a land-based business where the balance sheet builds wealth
  • Can manage calving, herd health, and drought risk hands-on
  • Will hedge price risk with basis and futures rather than hope

Probably not if you…

  • Need steady monthly income from day one
  • Want a hands-off or absentee business
  • Cannot ride out a soft leg of the cattle cycle
  • Expect high margins from a commodity you do not price

Sources & Method

Figures are compiled from the public sources below; the bands are a synthesis of them, not copies

How these numbers were built: the default herd, pounds sold per cow, prices and cost lines follow the University of Nebraska-Lincoln 2026 sample budget for a 400-cow herd on leased grass, cross-checked against the Texas A&M AgriLife 2026 District 1 cow-calf budget and USDA’s 2024 cow-calf costs and returns; cattle and hay prices come from fall 2026 Oklahoma and USDA auction reports; land values come from USDA’s 2026 land values survey; occupation and industry structure come from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (SOC 45-2093) and the U.S. Census Bureau (NAICS 1121); and financing terms come from the USDA Farm Service Agency and the SBA. Every source below links to the underlying public material so you can check any figure yourself. These are starting assumptions; the moment you enter a real ranch’s herd size, sale weights, prices, lease and hay costs, your numbers should replace ours. Figures are current as of October 2026.

Cost ratios, the margin band and the per-cow figures come from the UNL 2026 400-head budget and the Texas A&M 2026 District 1 budget, cross-checked against USDA’s 2024 costs and returns; prices come from fall 2026 auction reports. Results swing with region, rainfall and the cattle cycle.
