IT Consulting
IT consulting is expertise billed by the hour. You are not buying inventory or a storefront; you are building a bench of certified consultants, a project pipeline, and a reputation in a specialization clients will pay a premium for. The whole business turns on one number: the share of paid hours your team actually bills.

Cited sources Typical bands for this kind of business, compiled from the public sources listed under Sources and method; they are a synthesis, not figures copied from any one source. A fit if you…
- Hold deep, current expertise in a specialization clients pay for
- Can recruit, certify, and retain skilled consultants
- Can keep a project pipeline full so the bench stays billable
- Can sell value-based, fixed-outcome work, not just hourly bodies
- Run tight utilization and scope discipline on every engagement
Probably not if you…
- Want a hands-off business from day one
- Dislike selling and managing a pipeline
- Can not carry consultant salaries through a slow quarter
- Expect high margins without watching utilization closely

Sources & Method
Figures are compiled from the public sources below; the bands are a synthesis of them, not copies
How these numbers were built: establishment counts and industry size come from the U.S. Census Bureau (County Business Patterns and SUSB for NAICS 541512, Computer Systems Design Services); consultant wages come from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (SOC 15-1211, Computer Systems Analysts); bill-rate benchmarks come from published consulting-rate analyses; financing terms and the size standard come from the SBA; and firm-survival figures come from the Census Bureau’s Business Dynamics Statistics. Every source below links to the underlying public material so you can check any figure yourself. These are starting assumptions; the moment you enter a real practice’s utilization, bill rate, headcount, and compensation, your numbers should replace ours. Figures are current as of 2025-2026 and refreshed as the sources update.
Bill-rate and utilization benchmarks are anchored to published consulting-rate industry analyses; consultant compensation is anchored to BLS OEWS wages for computer systems analysts (SOC 15-1211) as a labor-cost proxy. Margin ranges are triangulated across these sources and checked against BizBuySell's SDE medians for IT and software service firms sold from 2021 to 2025, rather than a single audited operating survey specific to IT consulting.
